When the Indian stock market comes under pressure, defence stocks tend to move in the opposite direction of the trend. This happens because the industry has different growth sources compared to sectors like banking, information technology, automobiles, and consumer goods.
Nonetheless, defence stocks are not entirely immune to market volatility. To understand why they tend to outperform during market downturns, it is important to consider the underlying factors.
1. Government Spending Is Supporting the Sector
One of the biggest reasons behind investors’ interest in defence stocks is the continued dedication of the Indian government to improve national security and defence capabilities.
As per the Union Budget 2026-27, the Ministry of defence received an allocation of around ₹7.85 lakh crore, 15% higher than the previous budget. In addition, ₹1.39 lakh crore was allocated for domestic procurement of defence equipment.
The spending provides various options for companies dealing with aircraft, radars, electronics, missiles, ships, and other defence equipment.
2. India Is Focusing More on Domestic Manufacturing
India is trying to decrease its dependency on foreign defence equipment by promoting domestic production. This will benefit firms designing and producing defence-related products.
Firms like Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics and Bharat Dynamics have a presence in various segments of the defence supply chain. With an increase in domestic sourcing, such firms will be given chances to provide their equipment to the military.
It is a possible scenario of growth for investors. But policy support will not ensure profits for all firms.
3. Geopolitical Tensions Can Increase Investor Interest
Geopolitical tensions can increase investor interest in the defence sector since the country will assess its security needs, increase the readiness of its forces, and invest in weapons and technology.
This could have positive implications for expected future demand from the defence sector, particularly for companies that provide essential military systems.
However, it is also necessary to note that expectations of increased demand do not automatically mean revenue generation.
4. Strong Order Books Offer Long-Term Visibility
defence firms usually have huge deals that take many years to complete. An order book could offer visibility about the future earnings of such companies, thus making them appealing for investors concerned about long-term gains rather than short-term market movements.
If investors are worried about certain industries, they will prefer companies that have government clients and some confirmed orders in their pipelines.
Nevertheless, having an order book does not mean that the company will earn a lot of money. There is a need to consider execution risks, production costs, components, working capital, among other factors.
5. Why Other Sectors May Be Under Pressure
Different sectors react in different ways to economic and market factors. High oil prices can affect airlines, logistics firms and manufacturers. Expensive funding will have an effect on interest-sensitive firms, while poor consumer demand will affect those who produce discretionary goods.
Companies in the defence sector may be less susceptible to some of these challenges since their demand is usually related to procurement from the government, rather than everyday consumers.
It does not mean that they cannot react to falling markets. Defence shares can go down due to overvaluation, negative earnings surprises, or reduced equity allocation by investors.
Conclusion
While other sectors are struggling, defence stocks can do well due to their support from government expenditure, local manufacturing, and long-term orders. These elements can make the sector attractive even when investors have doubts regarding the economy.
However, despite the sector being in growth, it does not mean that investing in any firm within the sector is good regardless of the price at which it trades.
