Clean Energy Investing in India — What the Numbers Are Actually Saying Right Now

Clean Energy Investing in India

The clean energy narrative in India is no longer merely an aspiration that will take time to be achieved. Clean energy sources like solar, wind, hydroelectricity, battery technology, green hydrogen, and their infrastructure are drawing more attention as electricity demand rises.

But the key issue for investors is not just the rising trend in clean energy but what the figures are actually revealing.

Solar Is Leading the Expansion

Solar energy is currently the most influential factor in India’s renewable energy sector. Solar energy capacity in India stood at 168.04 GW as of August 31, 2026, according to MNRE. India’s total renewable energy installations, including large hydro power, were 295.55 GW, whereas non-fossil fuel energy installations, including nuclear energy, were 304.33 GW.

During April-August 2026, India added about 17.78 GW of solar power installations. This indicates that solar energy is transforming from a potential source to a substantial source of electricity production for India. For investors, this means the field includes not only solar energy production but also companies dealing with equipment, cell and module production, transmission, etc.

Wind Is Picking Up Momentum

While the spotlight remains on solar, wind energy is also witnessing rapid growth. India has an installed wind capacity of 58.52 GW as of August 2026, as per MNRE. India has added around 2.43 GW of wind capacity from April to August 2026.

The last financial year has been especially significant for India in terms of wind capacity additions. India added 6.05 GW of wind capacity in FY2025-26.

This is important since an extensive renewable energy network cannot be fully dependent on a single energy source. While solar energy is generated only during the daytime, wind energy could help generate electricity at different times.

Clean Energy Investment Is Already Significant

These figures suggest that the country’s energy transition has also drawn considerable investments. According to the IEA, 83% of India’s power sector investments are inclined towards clean energy in 2024. Solar PV accounted for more than half of non-fossil investments in the period preceding this.

Moreover, financing issues continue to plague clean-energy projects. According to the IEA, the cost of capital for grid-scale renewable projects in India is about 80% higher than in developed countries. Other problems include transmission and payment risks from distribution companies.

India’s Electricity Demand Adds Another Layer

India’s clean energy opportunity is linked to increasing electricity demand. According to the IEA, India’s electricity demand is projected to grow by around 6.4% annually until 2030.

This implies a structural driver for renewables capacity expansion. However, generating electricity is not the only challenge. India needs the infrastructure to transport and store it.

Where Could the Investment Opportunity Be?

Potential areas include:

  • Solar module and cell manufacturing
  • Wind turbine and component manufacturing
  • Renewable power generation
  • Power transmission and grid infrastructure
  • Battery and energy storage
  • Green hydrogen
  • Solar and wind equipment
  • Engineering and project-development companies

Green hydrogen is another developing area. India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission has an approved outlay of ₹19,744 crore and targets 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production by 2030.

These sectors are at different stages of development, so their financial performance and risks can vary significantly.

The Numbers Also Point to Risks

Rapid capacity growth does not always translate into good shareholder performance. It is also necessary to analyze debt, project costs, cash flow, orders, valuations, and the business capacity to implement the project.

Grid connectivity is another issue that needs to be addressed. The International Energy Agency has pointed out inadequate transmission infrastructure as one of the barriers to renewable capacity development in India.

Pressure could also result from changes in equipment costs, interest rates, government policies, and competition. Even an operator in a rapidly growing industry will underperform when it comes to valuations and financials.

Final Thoughts

The clean energy market in India is in an important phase because of the increased electricity consumption and the growth in investments in this area. Yet, investors need to look at the bigger picture and learn about specific companies, their valuations, financial results, and industry threats to make an informed decision about investing in this segment.
